—About Us—

Academics

As kids continue to grow from second to fifth grade, they gradually experience more homework, long term projects, and added responsibilities that eventually prepare them for middle school. Students continue to a focus on spelling and reading comprehension through chapter books and book reports and can expect to progressively move to simple storytelling to writing more complex essays by the end of elementary school.

In science, kids begin to delve deeper into the meaning of topics in a mix of physical, life, and earth science. Organizational skills are brought into personal focus in third grade through a daily planner with the goal of being student led by fifth grade.

In fourth and fifth grade, students continue to build their skills in language arts with an expanded focus on grammar, reading, vocabulary and mechanics of writing. Students continue to develop their foundation of math skills through word problems, multiplication and division of decimals and fractions and measurement. And from a social studies perspective, fifth graders focus on US History from first settlers through the American Revolution.

The Elementary School at St. Norbert includes grades kindergarten through five and features a curriculum designed to educate the whole child. Our students develop across three areas critical to the overall wellbeing of a child: academic learning, social emotional learning, and faith. Ultimately, this intentional approach embraced in our nurturing Christian environment supports the development of confident, happy children who love learning.

Students at SNS benefit from the design of a continuous learning program from PK-8. Our progressive program gives kindergarten and first graders the foundational skills they need in reading, math and science. This includes beginning reading and writing skills, basic sentence structure and punctuation. Foundational math skills are taught with a focus on numbers, adding, subtracting and the realization that operations exist. From a science perspective, students are immersed into our new K-8 hands-on science curriculum.

Enrichment Programs

Our elementary students enjoy Spanish, Physical Education and a Fine Arts - Music program as part of their education.

Spanish

The main focus of the elementary Spanish levels is to expose students to different elements and structures of the Spanish language. Students use their understanding of the alphabet to explore reading in Spanish using proper pronunciation. Nearing the end of elementary school, the students are introduced to the concepts of conjugation.

Physical Education

Students enjoy physical education four times a week for K-4 and twice a week for 5th grade. This gives kids the much-needed opportunity to not only get exercise, but also learn proper exercise techniques while having fun with friends.

Fine Arts - Music

Students in kindergarten through third grade enjoy music class twice a week as they focus on fun catchy songs, dancing, movement and exploring of instruments. Children begin to recognize notes and literature is worked into music. Second and third graders build upon their musical skills by learning their recorder through the Recorder Karate Program. Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to join band and learn to play a woodwind and brass instrument.

Faith

Faith is the heart of a St. Norbert School education. Through religion class students learn how to be a good friend and how to follow expectations. This leads into how God wants us to live while learning from the bible how to treat each other. Students learn basic prayers such as the Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be, and Grace.

Social Emotional Learning

Just as academics are critical in the development of a child, so too are the “soft skills.” For elementary school, students build critical thinking and problem-solving skills alongside the development of social skills. This means students learn: to work respectfully with one another; how to communicate with others (children and adults); how to present effectively by speaking in a meaningful way with the use of paper; how to build good study skills as individual learners so they can help themselves moving forward. This intentional combination builds a child’s foundational toolbox of skills and gives them the confidence needed for any situation.
